DVD books |
The defacto standard for DVD-Video is DVD 1.0. DVD 1.0 was created by
a consortium of companies including: Matsushita, the parent company
of Panasonic in the US, Mitsubishi, Philips, Pioneer, Sony, Thomson,
Time Warner, Toshiba, and JVC.
The specification is broken down into 'books', labeled A through E pertaining
to different applications. They are :
Book A; DVD-ROM, which
is a read only specification
Book B, DVD-Video, containing the video specification
Book C, DVD-Audio, which
contains the audio specifications
Book D, DVD-R, which contains the
write once read many specifications
Book E, DVD-E (erasable or rewritable),
which contains the rewritable specifications
DVD-RAM falls under book E, which implies a very high degree of re-writability.
In the case of DVD-Video and DVD-Audio there is also an Application
Layer specification which defines the software application and the functions
built into video and audio players.
