New Media-Based Backup Solution Provides Easy-to-Use, Automated Backup Operation MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. and COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – November 17, 1999 – VERITAS® Software Corporation (Nasdaq: VRTS), the industry's leading enterprise-class application storage management software provider, and Mitsui Advanced Media, a subsidiary of Mitsui Chemicals America, Inc. and leading manufacturer of CD-Recordable (CD-R) media, today announced a strategic agreement to deliver an innovative media-based backup solution developed by VERITAS Software for use on Windows 95, 98 and NT Workstation. The new Mitsui Auto Protect® CD-R features VERITAS Software's backup software embedded on the CD-R media, which automatically initiates a backup when the Auto Protect® disc is inserted into the drive. The new Auto Protect CD-R, based on the award-winning VERITAS Backup Exec™ Desktop Edition engine, provides a variety of easy-to-use functions to back up a user's hard drive. Auto Protect CD-R allows the user to perform a full backup or select specific files and, with integrated disaster recovery, the user may completely restore his/her system in case of a hard-drive failure or replacement. The disaster recovery feature allows victims of a fatal crash to quickly and easily rebuild their system, and offers extra care to preserve system software and registry settings so the user doesn't have to reinstall the operating system, applications and system extensions. Other key features of the Auto Protect CD-R include its spanning capabilities it automatically prompts for the next disc when files are too large for a single disc and, with the autorun feature, the backup program starts automatically when the disc is inserted. The new Auto Protect also offers software compression, offering the ability to store up to one gigabyte of data on a single CD.
